THIS LOCATION IS A PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL, DO NOT ENTER DURING SCHOOL HOURS! Obtain Permission ftom Administration before Wandering Grounds!!
Here are some great photos and screenshots. At the last time we visited the school, there was a LOT (even more than in recent years) of construction/restoration (hopefully) work going on in the area the movie features as the dance parking lot.

I have so many more screenshots and photos to update this page with that I am a little behind. Make sure to take all precautions and attain permission before you roam this site. People can be a little strange about adults wandering the grounds of any school.

You will easily recognize the front entrance (On Philadelphia). That's actually the administration building and also the building where the hallway scenes were shot. The "parking lot" for the dance is actually a paved driveway in the middle of a park/lunch area off Whittier Ave. It is usually closed from the street, but if you enter the front gate of the school, you will easily be able to get to this location.

The back area of the Dance is behind the real-life Gym (not used for interior shots) and is also off of Whittier avenue. Also, while in the area, Bailey Street, a street you will see while in the neighborhood, is the home of Strickland's House from Part II, so make sure to visit that page and hit both sites!

Whittier Union High School AKA Hill Valley High School today! The bars in the front, (shown in the 1985 shots) are really there. This is the admin building, where you will need to go (after school hours) to make sure you have permission before you walk around. You can get in a huge amount of trouble if you wander around a school without permission and happen to be there at the wrong time. Whittier UHS was voted in to existence in 1905, The school opened a few years later.

This photo was taken in 2005 before they closed this wing.....

February 1994 - From the WUHS Class of 1996 Website. Photographer Unknown...

February 2007. Sorry for the grain, it was twilight. The tree to the left in the screenshot above is much bigger now and blocks the former angle - So this is taken standing on a picnic bench leaning my left shoulder against that tree. As you can see, WHS is still being fixed from the massive seismic trauma it's recieved over the years.

The black spot at the bottom of the steps used to be a drain. See screenshot above.

Our little digital Marty in the same place he sees Himself and Lorraine drive up..

Compare the sidewalk and the asphalt in this screenshot with the modern photo below;

Notice you can see the old cement, but more has been built around it.
This is a source of confusion for some people. Just remember, things have a tendency to change.
Just because it isn't picture-perfect anymore doesn't mean it's not the right place.

MORE PHOTOS:

The north side of the gym, looking east. These are the stairs which Marty, in the film, uses to get to the roof. They don't actually go anywhere anymore. The High School does not, and did not then, use the interior of this gym as it was damaged by both fire and earthquakes.

if you are coming back from below, TOLD YOU SO!.

The south side of the Gym, east side of the administration building. The building in front on the left is one of the main wings for classrooms. The crap on the right is part of massive construction around here on the day I last visited. In fact, I am pushing the lens through a rod-iron fence just to get this shot. (You can see the rest of the fnce across the picture in the background.) I must warn you before you visit this location that there are big, portable classrooms sitting over much of what was shot as the "parking lot" in the movie. Fortunately the punch-out spot was saved for future BTTF location seekers. These portables have been here since the mid-nineties, so I don't think they're going anywhere anytime soon.

The best comparative angle of the punch out scene! In the eastmost part of the school, on the side of Whittier ave. (NOT whittier blvd)

This is where Lorraine and Marty's car was, and the site of the punch out scene. You are looking west, at the eastern exterior of the Administration Building in which the hallway scenes were shot. It's hard to tell that this is the place based on my photos, but you can see that this tree is, in fact, the tree they parked next to. The screenshot above shows a corner in the left of this photo. I will try to get a better shot online soon!

The famous steps. Everyone thinks there was no Chain Link during back to the future. This is because in Part II it was removed. But carefully review your Part 1 DVD and you will see, in fact, as George runs by the chain link is there!
Don't believe me? There's a screenshot above that proves it!

The Door that Students in 1955 used to get inside the dance. (Best seen in P2)
Used to say "Girl's Gym" above the entranceway. See screenshot above.

The north side of the Gym, Where Marvin Berry & The starlighters parked and where Marty got locked in the trunk. Also, those are the double doors used for some shots in Part II. Obviously the doors themselves have been replaced. But it's still the site.

The north side of the Gym, Biff's car parked between the right two posts in P2. - strangely enough that's EXACTLY where the Starlighter's car was parked in part 1!! Woohoo! A continuity glitch.. ouch!

Looking west from Bailey St. The Blue house on the right is Strickland's house from Part II.

EVEN MORE BONUS PHOTOS;

A lot of little things have changed in the parking lot, like curbs where there didn't used to be, removal of some drain pipes, etc. The Gym is still, as of now, unused, but they've done a lot of little things over the years that make it look like it will be back to normal one day.
