It started with finding the long-secret location of Hilldale 2015. The brilliant Pat Evans (who's uncovered many locations) led us there, and that was it!! We were firmly resolved to find the missing pieces of the puzzle! With Hilldale under our belt, and several others gradually being weeded out, we carried on, until our list was nearly complete!
We really started hitting some snags, however. Many of the locations we had to look for by Aerial maps (for likely spots) - and then drive all around until we could find them. We, like so many others, had assumed that Jennifer's House was somewhere near Whittier High School, since it fit the location so well! But there was an uncanny feeling that we'd seen it before!!
Well, thanks to Michael J Burmeister, location Manager on Part II and III, we were able to find it at last - right under our nose in Monrovia, only ONE STREET over from where our friends had recorded several albums!! Strickland's house did end up being right next to WHS, so that area did have more than one location to visit, but who would have thought we wereliterally driving by Jennifer's house dozens of times without ever spotting it! So, BTTFTOUR.COM was born, and became instantly the most COMPLETE locations source on the internet. And the VERY FIRST to publish the location of Biff's Stairway, Jennifer's House, etc.
Originally we started the site with the intention of putting all our good info into a downloadable PDF tour guide so people would stop asking me to give them directions to all the sites when they came to visit Los Angeles. At the same time, we wanted to stay updated and keep a running pictoral archive of these sites.
The "Tour Guide" was, to date, never finished - because we got so busy, and the website took a bunch of effort. BUT WE WERE THE FIRST to have information on ALL the locations, courtesy of Mr. Burmeister and others, and the only ones to stay involved and keep abreast of the sites.
We'll still be around a long time to come, and though you can now find all of our sleuthing results all over the internet, (Seeing-Stars, IMDB, and other pay sites that stole our info) we thank you for checking us out, and just remember, we were first with a lot of these!
Thank you, and see you in the future.. or in the past!
Editor's rant: Some websites try to slag us off and claim they published some locations before we did. Let us at BTTFtour.com firstly express that in any case in which we've put up a location which we say we found first, it's because we rigorously searched the few BTTF web sites (IN ENGLISH) extant at the time and could not find any information. We also had these locations published on a former website between 2000 and 2001. Anything posted on BTTFtour.com years later was already posted there.
We killed our old site (which by the way, was the only site to have the pretty in pink locations, for exactly this type of reason). Back then IMDB and others hadn't yet begun stealing location info from other sites and posting them around, and we found that anything we posted (with no harm intended) that was also featured on other sites ended up being turned into a war. We understand how people felt, but we've always felt that there's no reason it should be a secret. However after spending hours and hours finding locations no one else had published, we started to understand why people get pissed when their unique info is ripped off and posted on another site, making someone else money.
Secondly, if others don't, We realize full well that most if not almost all of these locations were known to people during and immediately after filming. We are merely re-discovering them and making them available to a wide audience on the internet for the first time. Even most of the locations we "broke" to the public were given to us by the location manager. Nobody truly 'discovers' them - millions of people have seen them on film, and doubtless people in those neighborhoods always knew where they were, and in some cases, even took pictures to show friends. (A good example is Hilldale 2015.)
This shouldn't be an issue and we want to work together with all kinds of websites. BTTFtour is meant to be an archive of everyone's hard work, in one place! We worked really hard to bring you locations no one had published before, such as the 1985a stairway, and Jennifer's house, and we would very much like credit if you're going to repost our information, but we realize it's only a matter of time until the big boys like IMDb and Seeing-Stars steal the information without giving reference or credit to the people who did the footwork.
However, we try to maintain the BEST, most complete and UPDATED archive of photos and information on the web for BTTF locations, and we can only do it with your help. More and more, we're beginning to feature YOUR photos and stories on the site. The only reason we created the site was to educate/entertain people and have one venue for BTTF fans to find this information that was created BY the BTTF fans FOR the BTTF fans.
And that's still our purpose to this day. We don't make profit from this site, and that is not now, or ever will be it's point. And so other "mega-sites" that steal from ours in order to make more money without giving us credit can kiss it, because we don't give a crap. We'll still be doing this in the years to come because we're still fans.
And in the end, all the credit deserved goes to the Location Scouts and Production Designers and all the other talented cast & crew from the Back to the Future films, who actually made the movies and brought this awesome story to life for all of us. We had nothing to do with it.
